March 2006 Newsletter

Featured Safety Product:

This month we began offering at every safety presentation the award winning "Stranger Safety" DVD created by Julie Clark founder of the Baby Einstein Company, and John Walsh host of America's Most Wanted. The Safe Side is designed to teach, empower, and entertain children.

One of the most important things you can do to protect your children is to talk to them about potentially dangerous situations. The Safe Side makes that easy. This laugh-out-loud video is designed for elementary-school-aged children. It keeps kids engaged while teaching them seven ‘Hot Tips’ for personal safety around people they don’t know, and those they ‘kinda know’. Hosted by “Safe Side Superchick”, the information is understandable and never scary.

Colorado Safey Educators & Five Star Seminars will be offering this DVD at every presentation. We are pleased with the feedback that we are getting and are proud to offer this dynamic DVD as a safety option for your children, grandchildren, friends and family.

Upcoming Classes:
Behavioral Safety & Personal Security
Children's Safety
Date Rape & Date Rape Drugs
Identity Theft Prevention
Safety for Travelers
Wheelchair Self-Defense & Techniques

News & Updates:
Last month we announced that our safety newsletter could be accessed through your home page by clicking the orange subscribe icon. We know many readers found that to be a helpful tool. If you haven't tried it yet, we would encourage you to try it out so that you may get the most up to date postings.

March is National Nutrition Month. This annual campaign, sponsored by the American Dietetic Association, reinforces the importance of good nutrition and physical activity as key components of good health.

Safety Tip of the Month:

How many of you have gotten into an accident reaching for that last fry in the bottom of the fast food bag? Did the responding officer say, "Excuse me, but is that french fries on your breath?" Of course not. By the time the police come, you've popped a mint, and tossed your trash. After all it's not like you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Well, I'm here to let you know that eating and driving is just as dangerous and drinking and driving.
In a 30 minute lunch hour, you have just enough time to hop in the car and speed off to the closest fast food joint. You order at the drive thru, and before you ever pull away, your hand is in that bag. It's not just fast food though, here is a list of dangerous food (yes we said it - dangerous):

  • Candy Bars with Nuts or Crumbs - Have you ever bit into a candy bar and had all of those chocolate pieces fall into your lap? Next thing you know, you're looking to see if you have any chocolate stuck to you. Crash!
  • Coffee - Ever ordered you're favorite latte, made a sharp turn and splash! Hot coffee everywhere, and your reaching down to clean it up before it stains everything.
  • Greasy Food (fried chicken) - Do you know what to do with a greasy steering wheel? Reach for a napkin. Where is the napkin? Hmmm I don't know, let me look for one while I try to steer this greasy wheel with my greasy hands.
  • Restaurant Style Hamburgers - There is a reason why they call them "restaurant style". Because the only safe place to eat them is in a restaurant with two hands.
  • Jelly or Cream Filled Pastries - Jelly is oozing out of your donut, and you're turning your head to lick the ooze, and the sticky jelly drips down your front, and you lick your finger to clean the sticky ooze, and your fingers are now sticking to your steering wheel/hair/clothes/napkin, you are in a sticky situation while driving!
Safe Driving Food (for most):

  • Gum
So what do you do with that 30 minute lunch break?

  • Well, you could show this article to your boss and ask for an extra five-ten minutes.
  • Order in. Employees often place group orders from take out companies.
  • Bring a sack lunch. Boring we know, but imagine the money you'de save plus the bonus of having a healthier lunch.
  • For those of you who can't live without the drive thru - Resist the temptation of the bag. Close it up immediatly, and put it in the trunk until you get back to work.
