June 2006 Newsletter

Earlier this year, Barbara Scott received letter after letter from the principal of her children's and grandchildren's elementary school.

She didn’t like the first letter.
The second letter really upset her.
The third letter sent her into action.
The fourth letter created partnering arrangements with the best of the best in the National children’s safety arena.

What does a mother, grandmother, and founder of an educational safety company do when she receives letters about two weeks apart like this?

“Dear Parents,This morning, while en route to school, there was an attempted abduction of two students."Please remind your children of the “Stranger Danger” procedures you have worked out with them.”

She not only does something, but she brings in the very BEST to help!

June is National Safety Month.

There is nothing more important than the safety of our children.

Barbara Scott has found the perfect 3-step approach for teaching children's safety in a positive, fun, and uplifting way.

Step 1: Live, interactive, hands-on, group safety training.

Step 2: Continued awareness and anti-abduction techniques taught in the home using both of these Nationally-acclaimed and award-winning DVDs and music CDs. Children learn best from watching and listening to things they enjoy.

Step 3: Practice. Practice. Practice within the home. John Hall's How-To Escape from Abductors techniques takes over without missing a beat, where The Safe Side's awareness, fun-teaching methods end. They complement each other perfectly for the benefit of our children.

We are proud to be able to offer these outstanding safety programs and products to you and yours.

Memorial Day Weekend 2005 Highlights
Colorado State Patrol Colorado
May 27, 2005 - May 30, 2005

• The CSP contacted 22,578 vehicles.
• A total of 12,969 citations were issued.
• CSP officers assisted 2,859 motorists.
• Citations issued for speeding, a major cause of most crashes, totaled 5,457.
• Citations for other major causes of crashes included:
698 for aggressive driving,
385 for following too close,
436 for lane violations,
136 for careless driving,
241 for traffic control violations,
78 for improper passing,
and, believe it or not, 38 for driving on the wrong side of the road.
• Total citations issued for not wearing seat belts were 2,512. Along with excessive speed, one of the other major contributors to serious injuries and fatalities are drivers and passengers who do not buckle up.
• Drug related charges totaled 68.
• Weapons related charges totaled 9.
• CSP investigated 28 DUI crashes, not fatals.
• The CSP issued 555 citations to drivers who where under restraint or suspension.
• Citations for lack of proof of insurance totaled 644.
• A total of 241 individuals were arrested for felony, misdemeanor or on warrant arrests.
• Additionally, the CSP recovered 18 stolen vehicles.

“Although there were seven traffic fatalities reported during the holiday weekend, none were alcohol related,” said Colonel Trostel. “We are encouraged by this fact as hopefully Colorado motorists are getting the message to celebrate responsibly, not driving if they have been drinking and if celebrating with alcohol designating a sober driver.”

Last month we began offering at every safety presentation the award winning "Stranger Safety" DVD created by Julie Clark founder of the Baby Einstein Company, and John Walsh host of America's Most Wanted. The Safe Side is designed to teach, empower, and entertain children.

One of the most important things you can do to protect your children is to talk to them about potentially dangerous situations. The Safe Side makes that easy. This laugh-out-loud video is designed for elementary-school-aged children. It keeps kids engaged while teaching them seven ‘Hot Tips’ for personal safety around people they don’t know, and those they ‘kinda know’. Safety Tip of the Month:

One of my children called me the other day from an auto repair shop. She was having trouble braking and pulled in for an unexpected repair. I was more than willing to help, and began reading my credit card information over the phone. My daughter watched as the man wrote down all of my information including first/last name, type of credit card, credit card number, and expiration date, on a small notepad before entering this information into the credit card machine. She also noticed that he had several notes in this book that were separated by lines between each customers information such as what work they were looking to have done, contact info, random notes. As harmless as this seemed to the employee, if he were to lose his 4 inch notebook, lives would be ruined. My daughter worried about looking paranoid, but felt strongly about protecting my identity. She asked the man to rip out my information from his notebook to bring it home safely to me, which he willingly did.
Never did I think twice about reading my card number over the phone. I always assumed the employees were entering them straight into the machines. Please, if you have no other choice but to charge things over the phone, you might ask if it was written down on anything non-business related, and ask them to shred it if they have.
Colorado is 5th in the Nation for Identity Theft. This fast growing crime effects people of all ages, race, backgrounds, and financial status.

April 2006 Newsletter

IS OPENING YOUR DOOR TO STRANGERS
opening the door to danger?

The doorbell rings, and there is a man standing there with a package, or flowers, or paperwork for you to sign. How do you know if their intentions are good?
You don't!
You always need to trust your instincts and know when to open the door, and when not to.

Consider the following:

  • Are you expecting this person/service?
  • Is this person wearing a uniform, do they have ID?
  • Are there forms to sign?
  • Did they arrive in a company vehicle?
  • Could the package be left on the porch instead of opening the door?

It is not rude to talk through a locked screen, or through a window. The majority of deliveries and service calls are made during normal business hours. Communicate with your family, and know if they are expecting a package, or a home service of any kind.

What to do if you suspect the person has other intentions:

  • Do not open the door for any reason, especially if they are demanding that you open it. They may be the nicest person in the world, then again, they may not. You just don't know.
  • Try to remember as many details about the person, vehicle, time, and situation.
  • Call the non-emergency sheriffs line for your county (even if it's only a suspicion).
  • Inform the HOA President, neighborhood committee, or apartment manager of a suspicious person in the neighborhood.

Reviewing these simple steps could save your life, protect your home & your family.

Testimonial of the Month:

I can't thank you enough for coming and presenting your program. I can't tell you how much great feedback I have received! You have fantastic skills and a great way of working with people. As our program continues to grow, I would love to bring you back. Thanks again!

Spring Cleaning Safety Tips: from the American Academy of Pediatrics

Around the House

  • Choose nontoxic products for your spring cleaning. For example, vinegar and water is an inexpensive and effective window cleaning solution.
  • Time to move the furniture? Place cribs, playpens and other furniture away from the window and accessible drapery cords. Children can climb up on furniture and fall out of the window or get strangled in the cords.
  • Make sure window guards/bars are secure, and know how to open the window in case of fire. Screens do no prevent window falls.
  • Test all your smoke alarms to ensure they are working. Change the batteries at least once every year. Most smoke alarms also need "spring cleaning" maintenance - check your manual.
  • Develop and practice a family fire escape plan in case of emergency.
  • Consider installing carbon monoxide alarms in your home.
  • Make sure small parts, plastic bags, small toys, balloons or any other choking hazards are out of reach of young children, particularly those less than 36 months of age.
  • Check your home for recalled and banned children's products. To find out about recalled products, go to http://www.recalls.gov
  • Keep traffic areas free of clutter, toys and rugs in order to avoid tripping with your child in your arms.
  • Doors that lead to the basement should have a self-latching lock to prevent children from falling down the stairs.
  • Post the Poison Help Line number (1-800-222-1222) and your pediatrician's number on all phones.

Garage

  • Discard toxic and flammable materials you no longer need. Place remaining materials high and out of reach. Keep toxic products in their original containers.
  • Check the garage for flammable liquids such as gasoline, paint thinner, paint and cleaners. Make sure safety caps are in place and they are not near any heat sources. Keep only the amount you need to use - don't stock up on extra cans.
  • Tidy loose papers, old rags, and debris in the garage that could contribute to a fire.
  • When washing the car, clean the car safety seat as well - sticky snacks, crumbs, and drinks can interfere with the crotch buckle and chest clip. Use the instructions to find out how to remove the cover and clean these parts. Take the time to weigh and measure your children to make sure they still fit in the seat. Check that the shoulder straps are the right height. Be sure the seat is installed securely.

Yard

  • Choose nontoxic fertilizers, insecticides and gardening supplies.
  • Eliminate any standing water to prevent drowning (buckets, drums, baby pools). Remember that a young child can drown in only a few of inches of water.
  • Check the play area for sharp objects, poisonous plants, and tripping hazards.
  • Install surfacing under playground equipment. Check play equipment for loose or exposed hardware, broken parts, and stability. Go to http://www.cpsc.gov/ for more info.
  • If you have a pool or spa, it should be enclosed by a four-sided fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Learn CPR and have a phone and emergency equipment poolside.
  • Children must not be allowed to ride as passengers on lawn mowers or to be towed behind mowers in carts or trailers. They should not be permitted to play on or around the mower when it is in use or in storage.
  • Most yard cleanup tools (ladders, weed-eaters, pruning shears) are not safe for children. If your child wants to help in the yard, he or she should use tools designed for children, such as a small plastic rake, child's shovel, or broom.

Upcoming Classes:

Behavioral Safety & Personal Security
Children's Safety
Date Rape & Date Rape Drugs
Identity Theft Prevention
Safety for Travelers
Wheelchair Self-Defense & Techniques

Safety Tip of the Month:

Last year, cell users were urged to put the acronym ICE "in case of emergency" before the names of the people they want to designate as next of kin in their cell address book.
Other emergency contact programs charge as much as $200 a year to register, but the ICE initiative is available free to over 192 million cell users in the United States.
This ICE number should be listed in your cell phone address book should contain the phone number of a next of kin or other person that you would like to have contacted in the event of an emergency.
This entry could be made even more specific and equally helpful by denoting the ICE entry as: ICE MOM, ICE DAD etc. for quicker reference. Make more than one ICE entry in your address book in the event that one or more entries cannot be reached.

March is National Nutrition Month. This annual campaign, sponsored by the American Dietetic Association, reinforces the importance of good nutrition and physical activity as key components of good health.

Safety Tip of the Month:

How many of you have gotten into an accident reaching for that last fry in the bottom of the fast food bag? Did the responding officer say, "Excuse me, but is that french fries on your breath?" Of course not. By the time the police come, you've popped a mint, and tossed your trash. After all it's not like you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Well, I'm here to let you know that eating and driving is just as dangerous and drinking and driving.
In a 30 minute lunch hour, you have just enough time to hop in the car and speed off to the closest fast food joint. You order at the drive thru, and before you ever pull away, your hand is in that bag. It's not just fast food though, here is a list of dangerous food (yes we said it - dangerous):

  • Candy Bars with Nuts or Crumbs - Have you ever bit into a candy bar and had all of those chocolate pieces fall into your lap? Next thing you know, you're looking to see if you have any chocolate stuck to you. Crash!
  • Coffee - Ever ordered you're favorite latte, made a sharp turn and splash! Hot coffee everywhere, and your reaching down to clean it up before it stains everything.
  • Greasy Food (fried chicken) - Do you know what to do with a greasy steering wheel? Reach for a napkin. Where is the napkin? Hmmm I don't know, let me look for one while I try to steer this greasy wheel with my greasy hands.
  • Restaurant Style Hamburgers - There is a reason why they call them "restaurant style". Because the only safe place to eat them is in a restaurant with two hands.
  • Jelly or Cream Filled Pastries - Jelly is oozing out of your donut, and you're turning your head to lick the ooze, and the sticky jelly drips down your front, and you lick your finger to clean the sticky ooze, and your fingers are now sticking to your steering wheel/hair/clothes/napkin, you are in a sticky situation while driving!
Safe Driving Food (for most):

  • Gum
So what do you do with that 30 minute lunch break?

  • Well, you could show this article to your boss and ask for an extra five-ten minutes.
  • Order in. Employees often place group orders from take out companies.
  • Bring a sack lunch. Boring we know, but imagine the money you'de save plus the bonus of having a healthier lunch.
  • For those of you who can't live without the drive thru - Resist the temptation of the bag. Close it up immediatly, and put it in the trunk until you get back to work.

Safety Tip of the Month:

Ah, love is in the air. Anniversaries, engagements, first dates, blind dates, and let us not forget "just friends". But lets come back to those first & blind dates. Yes, there are definitely more rules to dating than knowing which strappy heels to wear. Here are your general rules to dating that your mom might have said, but you may not have heard:
  • It sounds strange, but know who you are going out with. We don't mean know his favorite color, or what his sign is. We mean the basics. First name/last name. What line of work he is in. What city/area he lives in.
  • Don't accept drinks from strangers. If you get up to use the restroom and you've left your drink, it's gone, order a new one (don't worry, he's paying). You never know who's watching your drink while you've been gone.
  • Now, you're momma always told you to carry money in your shoe in case of an emergency. We're not telling you to carry it in your shoe, but we are telling you to carry it. Never, never, never leave for a date without some back-up money. The last thing you need is a date that went wrong, and your stuck out in the cold without cab fare.
So now all you need is the right shoes, dress, perfume, hair-do, mood, and date.
And just when you thought that love couldn't get any more complicated!
Happy Valentine's Day Ladies!

News & Updates:
Colorado Safety Educators and Five Star Seminar devoted their attention to medical providers starting in November in honor of National Hospice Month. With the success of this program we have taught several hundred women during the months of November & December of 2005. We have been asked to continue our program on Behavioral Safety & Personal Security for those in the medical field. Our thanks to those who attended, and to those who scheduled our seminar.

Safety Tip of the Month:

How many of us made the resolution to lose a few pounds? Well, I'm sure many of you have thought once or twice about hitting the gym this year. Remember these key points when making this resolution:
  • Gym parking lots are in the top 5 list for places women get attacked.
  • You are tired when you leave the gym from a long workout.
  • You might have your hair pulled into a pony tail and sporting loose clothes like sweats, or a baggy t-shirt.

We're not asking you to ditch the resolution of fitness this year. We're just asking you to be aware of your surroundings. Don't hit the gym at midnight when all of the machines aren't in use. Exercise with a friend. And although baggy clothes are cozy to workout in, consider changing back into your street clothes after working out.

We have resolved to make women safer and more aware during 2006. We hope you will do the same. Happy New Year!

Testimonial of the Month:
Dear Barbara Scott [Founder of Colorado Safety Educators],

Thank you so much for the Safety Education seminars you presented. You packed so much helpful information into one hour. The women in attendance were so thankful they had been there and all were inspired to encourage others to attend in the future. I am delighted at the feedback we received.

After seeing your presentation twice now, I feel very strongly that this seminar should be part of every woman's educational process-educational in the sense of learning to take responsibility for our own safety. What we learned from your program is a great step toward building our awareness and empowering ourselves to respond in threatening situations and preventing attacks.

We plan to have you back soon. I feel confident that the women who came to the first seminar will carry the word to their coworkers and we'll see that even more women interested in their safety will attend. I have recommended this program to others so that many more women will have the opportunity to attend this powerful presentation.
Thank you. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Very truly yours,
J.P.

News & Updates:
Colorado Safety Educators has teamed up with Five Star Seminars to present Public Awareness Campaigns to help boost community awareness.

Safety Tip of the Month:
'Tis the season for shopping. 'Tis also the season for crimes such as identity theft and robbery.
  • If you plan on using a credit card for shopping, only bring the card you plan on using.
  • Shop with a friend. There is nothing worse that stumbling around the mall and parking lots with your arms full of shopping bags.
  • Do not let strangers help you get your bags into the car, even if they appear to be harmless.
  • Have your keys ready when you get to your car.
  • Lock your doors immediately after you get into the car.

Doing these simple techniques could prevent an attacker from targeting you.
Have yourselves a happy, SAFE holiday season!
